Prof. Markus Nyikos, cellist
Born in Basel, Switzerland
Musical training at the Academy of Music Basel under Prof. Paul Szabó,
later in Belgrad and Prague under Prof. Stanislav Apolín. Masterclasses with Zara Nelsova, Pierre Fournier, Sándor Végh and the Janáček Quartet.
1976 Swiss Soloist's price, 1977 double pricewinner at the „Gaspar Cassadó Competition“ in Florence (Italy).
From 1974 to 1979, principal cellist of the „Lucerne Festival Strings“. At the same time assistent of Prof. Apolín at the Lucerne Music Academy.
Since 1979, professor for a cello masterclass at the University of the Arts in Berlin, which has an excellent reputation, their students coming from all continents.
Every year, master courses at different countries, mostly in Europe.
Nyikos is also a frequently performing soloist and chamber musician all over the world, as a member of the „Gililov-Quartet Berlin“ (former „Philharmonic piano quartet Berlin“), solo cellist of the „Philharmonische Virtuosen Berlin“, for many years member of the „12 cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic“, as well guest cellist with ensembles as the „Janáċek Quartet“, „StamitzQuartet“, „Brandis Quartet“, „Jacques Thibaud Trio“, „Berlin String Soloists“ and others.
For more then 40 years, as a duo cello and piano with Jaroslav Smýkal. Their repertoire contains more then 150 compositions from all musical epochs, many of them available on different CDs. Since 2012 concerts with the pianiste Björn Lehmann.
